PROVENANCE
Provenance research uses historical books, catalogues and printed sources to investigate the ownership, exhibition and collecting history of artworks and objects. Our specialist holdings include auction and exhibition catalogues, dealer and gallery publications, private collection catalogues, specialist monographs, journals and other material that may contain valuable historical references.
Research may involve tracing an object through auction appearances, exhibitions, dealers, collections and published literature, as well as comparing descriptions, measurements and historical photographs. Annotated catalogues, prices, purchaser names, collection references and other contemporary information can sometimes provide particularly useful leads.

PROVENANCE
We can undertake targeted searches for collectors, dealers, researchers and institutions, beginning with material held within our own collection and extending to relevant specialist sources where appropriate. Where permitted, we can also provide digital scans or extracts from publications identified during the research.
Our role is to locate and interpret potentially relevant sources, rather than to make definitive claims about an object's provenance where the evidence does not support them. Research findings are presented with the distinction between documented references, possible matches and further avenues for investigation, allowing the client to assess the evidence within the wider provenance record.
